The Mission of Junior ROTC is to motivate young people to become better Americans, and to promote their success in high school.
This elective, one credit course is not associated with armed services recruiting or college-level officer commissioning programs, and students who enroll in JROTC are under no obligation to enlist or otherwise participate in the military.  (Under current policies, service recruiters cannot even cosider for enlistment persons who have not completed high school.)  The MISSION of the Senior Army Instructor (LTC Hill) is to direct the JROTC program, both on and off campus; under the supervision of the Principal, so as to accomplish the JROTC mission and to affirm NHS' motto "Excellence is our Expectation"

The Unit Crest, shown on the right, was designed specifically for the Yellowjacket Battalion.  It shows the Yellowjacket, our schools mascot.  Under one of the jackets, there is a Blue Diamond, symbolizing the state of Delaware.  The diamond is on top of a shield and a sword, which derive from our units patch (upper left).  Our school colors, just as those of Cadet Command and the Army are black and gold.  On the scroll at the bottom of the crest, the school motto, "Excellence Is Our Expectation", is inscribed.  This crest, worn only by upperclass cadets in the Yellowjacket Battalion, is very unique and symbolic of Newark High School Junior ROTC.
